Gearboxes are fine but I did here a few people saying they'd broken them in the past. However you can break more or less anything if your rough with it so I suspect a lack of mechanical sympathy was likely the cause. Engines are great, only real issue is the exhaust manifold can crack however it can be repaired/welded. Cambelt interval is quite short at 50k miles or 5 years so be aware of that when buying.

I’m pretty sure those have an MMT automatic gearbox. These are a bit different as they’re a electronically actuated manual gearbox rather than your typical automatic gearbox that uses a torque converter. I once had use of a Yaris with an MMT gearbox and I didn’t really like it as it seemed to have all the disadvantages of automatic and manual gearbox with none of the advantages of each. Personally I’d say drive one and see what you think, it might suit your driving style. If it doesn’t, you can’t go wrong with a manual.

I personally don't think its a bad engine, it just never lived up to the Toyota standard of reliability that people expected. The main issues with this engine are all emission control related. EGR valve clogs up, DPF fills with soot and head gaskets can fail because of piston carbon build up. However compared to some of the issues the german's had with their 1st generation euro 5 diesels, the Toyota 2.2 D4d isn't so bad. I had no issues with my Auris SR180 in the 6 months I had it. I've also since had a Lexus IS220D which had the same engine. I had that for 18 months and the only issue that I had was the DPF. I think that was more age related though and it was just at the end of its life. If I were buying an Auris T180 I would get one with average mileage for its age (100-140k) with good service history. With this sort of age & mileage, if the head gasket was going to go it probably would have done so. If you are really concerned about this you could check if its had an updated replacement engine from Toyota under warranty. To do this you'd need to go to a Toyota dealer with the VIN number of the car and get them to check what service history they have for the vehicle. I did this with my Lexus IS220D and it identified that it had received a replacement engine under warranty. I wouldn't say this is really necessary though if its got reasonable mileage and service history. The main issues with this engine these days are EGR and DPF related. The EGR is easy to clean so this can be kept on top of with regularly maintenance. The DPF is a mixed bag, it may stay clear if you do a lot of motorway miles but if you don't it will clog up and cause an issue. You'll know when its starting to get full and the car starts actively regenerating when you start randomly seeing puffs of white smoke in your rear view mirror. The best option is to remove the DPF and remap the car (this will also disable the EGR) however its not technically legal. It will pass an MOT though as long as the DPF has not been obviously tampered with (i.e. obviously cut and welded). Another thing to consider with these is the cost of replacement parts. Particularly flywheels and injectors. A new clutch and flywheel fitted is about £1200, new injectors are £650 a piece + the labour to replace. Given that the T180's are generally in the £1500 to £2500 price range, its questionable whether it's economical to repair should it need either of those items. Used parts are always an option and much cheaper however they will be from cars of a similar age so might not be in much better condition.

cheer`s for that stew im looking at 08-09 plate`s with 70.000 ml on them £3200 there a couple about on the bay, i dont do mega milage 4000 ml a year and as a ex fitter i can do most job`s , just want something reliable when sorted , mis my carolla t-sport`s so much. saying that i might be better of with a AURIS SR 1.6 ?. currently running a 07 avansis 141000ml run`s + drive`s like a dream BUT NOT A LOOKER , had to buy a car quike as my MAZDA 6 MPS failed atb john

@@gibboj If you can live with the performance I would say the Auris SR 1.6 is a much better choice. You can get a facelift model SR (late 2009 onwards) for £3k

That's incorrect, the standard exhaust system has two catalytic converters. On the Z16LER (which I had in this video) there is a precat off the back of the turbo and the main cat further down the exhaust system. The A16LER is different but still has two catalysts. From what I remember you probably couldn't go much bigger without removing the crash bar or modifying it. It depends on what your goals are really though, Dynodaze used an intercooler not much bigger than this on their 322bhp CZT.

It’s plug and play, I just had to remove the factory stereo and install the new one. There’s a few decent guides on UA-cam how to remove the factory unit. It’s pretty straightforward from what I remember.

@@reid04151 I’ve seen a few of them got my eye on a tesla l style unit on Amazon would you recommend it or steer clear

The one in the video was OK but I don’t really know much about the Tesla style ones. They’re generally quite expensive from what I’ve seen though

@@reid04151 did you buy the complete stereo surround? If so where from and do you remember how much it was please? I desperately want to change mine and get rid of all the clutter of the station buttobs

It came as a complete unit that slots in place of the stock unit. I got mine off eBay so not the same listing but this looks similar
